Maggie Burgess founded Promise Nepal in 2002 after learning that leprosy is endemic in Nepal despite it being a completely curable disease. She personally funds all the running costs of the charity to ensure that every penny donated by the public is spent directly on the fight against leprosy.
Maggie has a Diploma in Tropical Nursing (with distinction) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an MSc in Medical Anthropology from Brunel University. While conducting ethnographic research for her Master's degree, she lived in a leprosy colony for 6 weeks. She has been awarded a DSc (honoris causa) from Brunel University.
