Promise Nepal are enormously grateful to nurse Lindsay Baigent for her recent herculean fundraising efforts!

Lindsay was the first ever winner of the Dr Maggie Burgess Travel Scholarship and travelled to Anandaban to work with Leprosy affected people under Promise Nepal’s umbrella. Like Maggie, she was caught up in the earthquakes in 2015. This is what she had to say about her time in Nepal:

“My Friends know that I went to Nepal at the beginning of April to volunteer at Anandaban Leprosy Hospital, in Lele, Lalitput, about 8 miles from Kathmandu. What none of us expected was the devastating earthquakes on the 25th April – 3 days before my birthday – and 12th May – as well as all the aftershocks.

I was privileged to work with the most amazing doctors, nurses and all the other staff at Anandaban, taking casualties, comforting the distressed, distributing aid and witnessed people doing amazing things with limited resources, but most of all, I saw the difference that caring – in the truest sense of the word – can make.

Leprosy affected patients showed such compassion and were happy to ensure that those who needed immediate medical help took priority. Anandaban cares for every patient who comes through their doors.

Promise Nepal is vital in keeping this hospital and other projects running to help those people who are marginalised in health care and society in general.”

Lindsay has just completed a solo cycle ride from Land’s End, 1146 miles to John O’Groats and raised an incredible £3,345 for Promise Nepal. Well done Lindsay! We are very grateful for her support and impressed by her stamina and commitment.

If you’d like to contribute to Lindsay’s fundraising in recognition of her achievement, you can make a donation on her Just Giving page.

The money Lindsay has raised will go a long way to helping people affected with Leprosy. To find, diagnose and treat a straightforward case can be around £150. Promise Nepal also funds reconstructive surgery – to restore the use of a hand with surgery and 6 weeks physio costs approximately £225.00.  Thank you Lindsay – you have made a huge difference to the lives of so many people.
